I came back to my “little house” for lunch. Being able to leave school and eat lunch is a simple gift that I treasure. Deciding to check my email while I ate, I opened up Chrome and signed into my email account. Thirty emails waiting in my inbox. I quickly separated the trash from what needed to be read. I saved my K-LOVE Verse of the Day to read before I deleted it.  Having deleted what didn’t need to be read, I was left with five emails that needed my attention. I clicked on K-LOVE’s Verse of the Day to begin.

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and give his life as a ransom for many.

Matthew 20:28

The words gave me pause. The Holy Spirit whispered, “Who have you served today, Erin?”

Uhhh…,” I stopped and thought. “I made cookies for the teachers I coached this morning.  Does that count as serving?” I asked.

No response.

“Hmm…probably not what God was thinking about when He had Matthew pen these words. Serving, serving, serving. How did Jesus serve? How am I serving like Jesus?” I wondered.

I still don’t have an answer–which in and of itself is not a good thing. Who have I served? If I proclaim Jesus as my Lord and Savior and give my life to Him, knowing that my number one goal is to be more like Him in my words and actions, how have I served like Him today?

One little moment–20 seconds at most.

One simple act–checking my email.

One profound question that I will think about the rest of the day and strive to live out the rest of my life.

  1. You’ve definitely served me–and your other readers–by offering this wisdom today. You’ve made me think as well, and I know this message will stick with me for the rest of the day!

  2. This is a true statement and needed reminder. Your time was well spent today, both at lunch and in sharing your beautiful message. Thank you.

  3. Wonderful message. So very timely for us during this Holy Week. I actually have this message written out and posted where I can see it (and my school kids can see it as well)–‘God, how can I serve YOU today?’ Just a visual reminder for me to stop, breathe and offer grace.

    Thanks for sharing!
